Grow your own potatoes
Have you ever dreamed of serving your own homegrown potatoes at Christmas dinner? Well, now’s the perfect time to make that dream a reality - plant seed potatoes now and you can enjoy them on Christmas day! We have a fantastic selection of potato varieties available in-store for you to grow your own:
- Red Duke of York: Great for roasting.
- Foremost: Versatile and flavoursome.

- Pentland Javelin: Known for its good disease resistance.
- Mans Peer: Ideal for growing in containers.

With National Allotment Week from 12-18th August, there’s no better time to start growing your own. Even if you don’t have an allotment, you can still enjoy the benefits of growing potatoes in your garden and even in the smallest of spaces; our Taylor’s potato growing bags, available for £3.99 each, are perfect for balconies or patios. Here’s how you can get started:
Planting potatoes in the ground:
- Choose a sunny spot: Potatoes need plenty of sunlight.
- Prepare the soil: Use Hilltop’s Rocket Gro organic compost to enrich your soil.
- Plant the potatoes: Place the seed potatoes 12 inches apart and cover them with 4 inches of soil.
- Water regularly: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Planting potatoes in a grow bag:
- Fill the grow bag: Use Rocket Gro Fruit & Veg organic compost, filling the bag about one-third full.
- Add the seed potatoes: Place three to five seed potatoes in the bag and cover them with 4 inches of compost.
- Top up with compost: As the plants grow, add more compost until the bag is full.
- Water regularly: Keep the compost moist to ensure healthy growth.
